The EC Directive 89/686, modified by the EC Directive 93/68 as regards the CE marking, states that personal protective equipment (PPE) can be put on the market and used only if it is guaranteed the safety of the users. It also defines the essential requirements with which the PPE has to comply. There are different procedures of conformity with the Directive, depending on the type of PPE. For equipment based on a simple design and intended for protection against minor injuries, the manufacturer's declaration is sufficient. For equipment intended for protection against major non-mortal injuries, it is required the EC Type Certification issued by a Notified Body. For equipment intended for protection against mortal risks or serious permanent injuries, besides the CE Type Certification, it is required the periodic inspection of the production or the certification of the Company Quality System. IMQ, as a Notified Body, can fulfil the procedure for the certification of the following personal protective equipment: conductive clothing, protective aprons against diagnostic medical X ray, protective gloves and mittens against electric risks.
